An international forum in Sofia on Wednesday will discuss the economic transformation of coal regions, the organizers from Brand Media Bulgaria said. Leading experts, representatives of EU institutions, local authorities, and business leaders from Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, Czechia, and other countries will talk about the opportunities for a just transition beyond borders.

Speakers include representatives of the European Commission, mayors and governors of coal regions, economists,  business representatives, and researchers.

The event is part of the Transition of Opportunities (TOP) project, which aims to promote the contribution of the EU's Cohesion Policy, Just Transition Fund and the European Recovery Plan for ensuring a smooth and equitable transition to a climate-neutral economy.

The forum will provide up-to-date information on steps and opportunities for economic development in Bulgaria's three coal regions: Pernik, Stara Zagora, and Kyustendil. The aim of the forum is to promote interregional cooperation with other countries with coal producing regions in transition and to contribute to a better knowledge of investment opportunities and policy challenges related to green transition.
