Half of all Bulgarians have taken measures to reduce their energy consumption in the past five years, according to a Eurobarometer report published by the European Commission on Tuesday. Most of those who did not, 62%, cite financial difficulties as the reason.
By comparison, 54% of EU citizens have not taken measures to reduce their energy, with the most common reason being financial difficulties or not owning the property they occupy. A total of 77% of EU citizens and 57% of Bulgarians have changed their energy consumption habits at home in recent years.
Most often Bulgarians (70%) and others in the EU (53%) expect European measures to help energy-poor households and to ensure that they can produce their own energy (50% in the EU and 47% in Bulgaria). According to 62% of people in the EU and 50% in Bulgaria, measures in the energy sector related to environmental protection should be in the field of renewables.
Half of EU citizens and 45% of Bulgarians say that when buying an electrical appliance, they are guided by energy efficiency label on it. The majority of respondents agree that energy measures for the next five years should include ensuring affordable prices, reducing consumption, increasing European energy independence and focusing on new energy generation technologies.
