There must be a well-organized market, integration and grid flexibility so that there are no problems with the increasing share of renewable energy and decentralized generation. Energy experts rallied around this view during a regional conference for renewable energy RE-Source Southeast, which is held in Sofia Tech Park.

The director of the national dispatching centre of the Electricity System Operator (ESO), Dimitar Zarchev, said that there is a need for balance and stability of the network, so the construction of more and more interconnectors between the countries is already visible. According to him, electricity production is growing by thousands of megawatts, which means that there must be balance and security of the grid. "We are talking not only about supply and production, but also about loading and storage, as well as the possibility of interconnected systems," Zarchev said.

CWP Europe's Energy Storage and Grid Connection Manager, Andrija Oros, believes that improving cross-border capacity and developing networks will help meet the challenges of today. He believes that storage and other types of flexibility should be subsidized. According to him, companies can offer advanced solutions and can also help with analytical data to provide flexibility. "There needs to be transparency and discussion to make the right decisions," Oros said.

The Manager for Eastern Europe of the Greek company Mytilineos, Massimo Ceccariglia, said that there is a problem with connectivity in all Eastern European countries. Therefore, according to him, the network should be able to develop in order to encourage the transition to a greener future. He pointed out that regulations at European level exist. Therefore, there should be opportunities to discuss and implement the right solutions. In addition, the public and private sectors should invest together, Ceccariglia believes.

BP’s Dr. Biljana Stojkovska explained that managing the network workload is the main challenge in the UK as well. There are also problems with energy storage. According to her, storage is not always the only right solution for dealing with problems in the workload of the network. According to her, network management should be improved, as well as production and demand should be planned. For Europe, congestion is a serious problem and it will not disappear in the future unless some real action is taken.
