The revenues of nights spent in accommodation establishments in Bulgaria in March 2024 exceeded the pre-pandemic 2019 revenues on an annual basis, the National Statistical Institute said.

The total revenues from nights spent increased by 17.4% year-on-year and reached 93.5 million BGN, of which BGN 58.8 million were from Bulgarian residents and BGN 34.7 million from non-residents. In March 2023, the revenues were BGN 79.6 million, up by 53.1% from March 2022. For reference, revenues stood at BGN 48.7 million in March 2019, up by 8.3% year-on-year. 

The total number of nights spent in this country in March 2024 was 1,074,800, up by 4.6% in comparison to March 2023. Bulgarian residents spent 733,000 nights, and non-residents spent 341,800 nights in accommodation establishments. NSI data show that the total number of nights spent in all accommodation establishments was 1,027,600 in March 2023 and 873,800 in March 2019.

The total occupancy rate of the bed-places in March 2024 was 27.1%, 0.1 percentage points more than a year earlier. The highest occupancy rate, 37.3%, was reported for bed-places in 4- and 5-star accommodation establishments, followed by 3-star establishments (25.4%), and 1- and 2-star establishments (16.4%).

The number of nights spent in accommodation establishments in March reached 497,200, up by 9.7% compared to the same month of 2023, with an increase of both Bulgarian citizens by 11.9% and non-residents by 4.1%. The number of nights spent by Bulgarian residents was 366,100, or 2 nights on average. The arrivals of non-residents were 131,100, or 2.6 nights on average, with 77.7% of them having stayed at 4- and 5-star accommodation establishments.
