site.btaBulgaria's Gross External Debt at End-January 2024: EUR 44,961.2 Mln

Bulgaria's gross external debt amounted to EUR 44,961.2 million (44.4% of GDP) at end-January 2024, increasing by EUR 357.2 million (0.8%) from end-January 2023 (EUR 44,604 million, 47.5% of GDP), the Bulgarian National Bank reported on Friday.

Short-term liabilities equalled approximately EUR 7,835 million (17.4% of the total debt, 7.7% of GDP), dropping by EUR 356 million (4.3%) from end-January 2023 (EUR 8,191 million, 18.4% of the total debt, 8.7% of GDP).

Long-term liabilities totalled EUR 37,126.3 million (82.6% of the total debt, 36.7% of GDP) at end-January 2024, growing by EUR 713.2 million (2%) from end-January 2023 (EUR 36,413.1 million, 81.6% of the total debt, 38.8% of GDP).

General government’s gross external debt totalled EUR 10,843.8 million (10.7% of GDP) at end-January 2024, growing by EUR 708.8 million (7%) from end-January 2023 (EUR 10,135 million, 10.8% of GDP).

The external liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 2,004.6 million (2% of GDP), decreasing by EUR 19.2 million (0.9%) from end-January 2023 (EUR 2,023.8 million, 2.2% of GDP).

The external liabilities of other monetary financial institutions (banks and money market funds) totalled EUR 6,547.4 million (6.5% of GDP), growing by by EUR 61.8 million (1%) from end-January 2023 (EUR 6,485.6 million, 6.9% of GDP).

Other sectors' external debt equalled EUR 11,985.9 million (11.8% of GDP), dropping by EUR 405.5 million (3.3%) from end-January 2023 (EUR 12,391.4 million, 13.2% of GDP).

The stock of intercompany lending amounted to EUR 13,579.5 million (13.4% of GDP) at end-January 2024, increasing by EUR 11.3 million (0.1%) from end-January 2023 (EUR 13,568.3 million, 14.4% of GDP). It held the largest share in external debt, equating to 30.2% at end-January 2024, compared with 30.4% at end-January 2023, BNB said.
