site.btaSofia Mayor Pledges Necessary Increase of Salaries of Municipal Healthcare Workers from April 1

Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev told a briefing on Wednesday that the wages of municipal healthcare workers will be increased to meet their demands and the collective agreement will be implemented following protests on Tuesday. The increase will take effect from 1 April, he specified.  

On Tuesday workers in child and school healthcare in Sofia protested in front of Sofia City Hall's building, demanding an increase of the basic salaries in the sector to BGN 1,890 from BGN 1,350.  

Initially Vassil Terziev proposed a pay rise by BGN 100 as of April 1. 

“In a series of talks with the Council of Ministers, we came to an agreement,” Terziev said, adding that all the formal steps for this are already being taken.   

“We would like to say that this is an extremely important issue for us - the fair remuneration of all employees,” the Mayor said, recalling that salaries have already been increased in the fields of transport, culture and education.  

Also on Wednesday, it emerged that GERB-UDF group on the municipal council will submit a proposal for a 20% increase of the salaries of the municipal health care workers, starting January 1. 

Councillor Georgi Georgiev told a news briefing that the increase will cost annually BGN 10 million.
