About 5,500 km (25%) of the national road network are in need of an overhaul, outgoing Regional Development Minister Andrey Tsekov said at Parliament's Question Time on Friday. This is not due to inaction by any government, but the result of an economic reality of the last 20-30 years when Bulgaria had a smaller financial capacity than was needed to maintain the road network, he said.
Tsekov said he agreed with the need to prioritize road repair projects: appeals for prioritization have been coming in from every region in Bulgaria.
He said he could commit himself to starting the design of bypass roads so that they can be included in a future investment programme after the main roads have been built. At this stage, several bypasses are included in the investment programme and most of them are in the large regional capitals.
