Varna Airport handled 1.8 million passengers in 2023, the press service of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, which operates the Varna and Burgas airports, said on Wednesday. The number of passengers has increased by 24% compared to 2022, and decreased by 12% compared to pre-pandemic 2019.

In 2023, Varna Airport had 44 airlines flying to 68 destinations. By tradition, it officially welcomed its passenger No. 1,000,001, who arrived on July 26.

Most of the passengers handled by the airport throughout the year came from Germany, 576,000. Next were Bulgaria, the UK, Poland and Austria. The top five destinations that Varna Airport offered flights to were Sofia, London, Vienna, Istanbul and Tel Aviv.

Over 2,300 charter flights were operated from the airport to Katowice, Warsaw, Poznan, Leipzig and Hanover.

Commenting on the airport's performance, the CEO of concessionaire Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, Frank Kwante, said that the company's task is to increase tourist traffic.

The total number of passengers welcomed at the Bulgarian airports in the Black Sea cities of Varna and Burgas in 2023 was 3.7 million. The number of flights handled exceeded 27,000. They were operated by 70 domestic and foreign airlines. The two airports offered flights to 105 destinations in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
