site.btaUPDATED Food Price Index Up by 0.76% in Second Week of January 2024

The market index for wholesale food prices in Bulgaria went up by 0.76% in the second week of January 2024 to 2.263 points. Before the holiday season, the index stood at 2.252 points and last week it was even lower at 2.246 points, the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets reported.

At the beginning of 2023, the food price index was 2.316 points, and around March 10 it reached its spring peak at 2.480 points. The base level of 1 point was set in 2005.

Over the past week, the average wholesale price of greenhouse cucumbers rose by 0.7% to BGN 2.96 per kilogramme. The price of greenhouse tomatoes fell by 1.5% to BGN 3.25/kg. Potatoes went down by 7.7% to BGN 1.20/kg.

The average wholesale price of carrots increased by 4.8% to BGN 1.09/kg. Onions (imported) depreciated by 4.9% to BGN 1.37/kg. Cabbage fell by 9.8% to BGN 0.83/kg. Red peppers went down by 1.6% to BGN 3.58/kg.

The price of imported apples appreciated by 7.1% to BGN 1.81/kg. Lemons went down by 2.4% to BGN 2.02/kg. Bananas stayed at BGN 2.86/kg. Tangerines went up by 2.3% to BGN 2.26/kg. Oranges rose by 3% to BGN 2.09/kg.

The average wholesale price of white brined cheese from cow's milk decreased by 0.4% to BGN 11.26/kg. The price of yellow kashkaval cheese of the Vitosha type remains at BGN 16.97/kg.

Yogurt (with fat content of 3% and over) went up by 1.7% to BGN 1.20 for a cup of 400 grammes. Fresh milk (with fat content of 3%) rose by 1.8% to BGN 2.30 per litre.

Chicken appreciated by 1% to BGN 6.68/kg. Eggs (size M) were selling at BGN 0.38 per piece, which is down by 2.6%.

Rice went up by 3.2% to BGN 3.24/kg. The price of lentils went down by 0.5% to BGN 4.23/kg. Dry common beans depreciated by 1% to BGN 4.15/kg.

The average wholesale price of sugar went down by 0.4% to BGN 2.16/kg. Sunflower oil went down by 1.8% to BGN 2.77 per litre. Flour (type 500) rose by 0.7% to BGN 1.37/kg. The price of butter from cow's milk appreciated by 3% to BGN 2.72 for a pack of 125 grammes.
