site.btaNational Audit Office Adopts 416 Audit Reports in 2023

The Bulgarian National Audit Office adopted 416 audit reports this year, the BNAO told journalists on Monday. The data from 288 financial reports by ministries, institutions , and municipalities for 2022 were summarized.

The reports show that incorrect data in the financial reports worth BGN 2.75 billion were corrected, bringing the share of reports with correct financial information to 76%.

In 2023, the BNAO sent 6 reports to the National Assembly Chairman, 14 reports to chairs of parliamentary committees, 7 reports to the prosecution service, 3 reports to the National Revenue Agency, 50 reports to the Public Financial Inspection Agency, 213 reports to the Council of Ministers, 45 reports to the Public Procurement Agency, 76 reports to the chairs of municipal councils, and 69 reports to the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria.

In September, the BNAO managed to overcome the delay and adopt conclusively all 57 audits delayed over the years. A total of 258 reports were adopted from August to December 2023.

The BNAO has 261 auditors and 126 vacancies. Thirteen external competitions were held this year, as a result of which 9 vacancies were filled.

At its last sitting on December 20, the BNAO is expected to adopt its work programme for 2024, based on a risk assessment and featuring audits of sites of high risk, strong public interest, significant financial resources, and compulsory audits under the National Audit Office Act.

Within two weeks, the BNAO is expected to publish on its website the reports of the participants in the October 29 local elections. A total of 690 participants have submitted reports thus far.
