site.btaFood Market Price Index Up by 0.5% in Mid-December

The market price index (MPI), which reflects the movement of wholesale food prices in Bulgaria, went up by 0.54% to 2.242 points this week. Last week, the index stood at 2.230 points, the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets said.

The level of the MPI at the beginning of 2023 was 2.316 points, and in the first third of March it reached its spring high of 2.480 points. The MPI's baseline level of 1,000 points was set in 2005. 

Greenhouse cucumbers decreased in price by 0.5% to BGN 3.63 per kilogram. The price of tomatoes fell by 1.3% to BGN 3.09/kg. Potatoes rose by 0.8% to BGN 1.26/kg. 

The price of carrots increased by 6.8% to BGN 1.10/kg, while the price of imported mature onions stood at BGN 1.35/kg. Cabbage was traded at 0.90 per kilogram. The price of red peppers fell by 2.1% to BGN 2.36/kg.

The price of imported apples increased by 2.3% to BGN 1.78/kg. Lemons rose by 0.9% to BGN 2.18/kg. The price of bananas went down by 1.4% to 2.78/kg. Tangerines decreased in price by 5% to BGN 2.45/kg. Oranges became cheaper by 1.3%, trading at BGN 2.23/kg.

The price of cow's cheese and Vitosha cheese depreciated by 0.5% to BGN 11.33/kg and BGN 17.23/kg, respectively. Yoghurt, with fat content of 3% and over, rose by 2.5% to BGN 1.21 for 400 g. Milk (3% fat content) increased by 2.2% to BGN 2.30 per litre. 

Poultry meat decreased in price by 1.4% to BGN 6.47/kg. Medium-size eggs sold at BGN 0.39 per piece wholesale at the end of the week.

The price of rice increased by 1.2% to BGN 3.17/kg. Lentils rose by 0.5% and were traded at BGN 4.22/kg. Ripe beans went down by 2.7% to BGN 4.04/kg.

Sugar depreciated by 2.5% and was traded at BGN 2.32/kg. Sunflower oil increased by 1.8 to BGN 2.83/litre. Flour, type 500, went down in price by 2.3% to BGN 1.26/kg. Butter made from cow's milk went up by 1.4% to BGN 2.74 for a pack of 125 g.
