The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has adopted a resolution calling on the European Council and the Member States to speed up the process of accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area, said EESC Member and Industrial Capital Association Secretary General Milena Angelova. The resolution was presented on October 14 in Brussels during a plenary session of the EESC.

The EESC has always supported the enlargement of the Schengen area. During the session, EESC President Oliver Ropke called on the European institutions to quickly take all necessary steps for the accession of Bulgaria and Romania. He recalled that the two countries had fulfilled all the conditions and deserved to be part of the Schengen area.

"The European Economic and Social Council expresses for the second time in an official document its support for the accession of our country to Schengen. I am proud of the decision of my colleagues", commented Angelova.

The EESC is an EU advisory body of employers, trade unionists and representatives of social, professional, economic and cultural organizations from the EU Member States.
