As many as 88.5% of the households in Bulgaria had internet access at home in 2023. Over a ten-year period, this share increased by 31.8 percentage points, the National Statistical Institute reported on Friday.
A total of 79.8% of the individuals aged between 16 and 74 used the internet every day or at least once a week at home, work or other places. The share of people who had never surfed the internet decreased to 11.8%.
The most preferred device for accessing the internet was a mobile phone (including smartphone), which was used by 78.3% of the people, followed by the laptop, by 33.5%.
Individuals used the network mostly for communication, as 69.0% of them carried out phone or video calls (using Viber, WhatsApp, Skype, FaceTime, Messenger, Snapchat, Zoom, MS Teams, Webex), 65.4% used instant messaging (using Viber, WhatsApp, Messenger, Snapchat, Skype, Discord, Telegram), and 64.2% logged into social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, etc.).
