In 2022, rail freight transport in the European Union reached 398 billion tonne-kilometres, almost returning to the level it was in 2018, 400 billion tonne-kilometres. Compared to 2021, however, in 2022 rail freight transport decreased by 0.5%, according to the latest Eurostat data.
The most significant increases in the tonnage of rail freight last year were registered in Denmark (+12%), Croatia (+7%) and Bulgaria (+6%).
In terms of freight weight, in 2022 it has decreased in 14 of the 25 EU countries with rail freight transport. The biggest decline was observed in Lithuania (-39%), Estonia (-24%), Finland (-22%) and Greece (-20%).
