Deputy Health Minister Mihail Okoliiski told a conference here on Friday that steps are being taken to increase the share of Bulgarians vaccinated against preventable diseases. Okoliiski said vaccination is one of the greatest life-saving achievements of modern medicine. He finds it necessary to make people aware of the importance of adhering to the immunization calendar and to pay attention to innovative practices in view of warding off unscientific approaches.

Okoliiski was speaking at the Second National Conference on Vaccine-Preventable Illnesses in Sofia.

He pointed to an unusually large increase in out-patient care resources in the budget of the National Health Insurance Fund. The increase can be used to encourage people to have annual checkups, because only 35% of the population undergoes such checkups.

UNICEF Representative to Bulgaria Christina de Bruin said the COVID pandemic interrupted the immunization cycle, and 67 million kids, including more than a million in Europe and Centra Asia, have missed a vaccine dose.
