The number of loans to non-financial corporations, financial corporations, households and NPISHs increased by 0.9% on an annual basis at the end of the third quarter of 2023 and their amount - by 11.3%, the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) said on Wednesday.

Amount of loans by sector

There were 150,000 loans to non-financial corporations, decreasing by 0.1% on an annual basis. Their total amount was BGN 43.686 billion marking a 7.2% increase on an annual basis. Compared to the previous quarter the number of loans to the non-financial corporations decreased by 1.1% while their amount rose by 1.5%.

The three economic activities with the largest share in the total amount of loans to the sector were repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (28.5%), manufacturing (21.4%) and real estate activities (10.4%). The loans over BGN 1 million had the largest share (75%) in the total amount of loans as of the end of September.

There were 989 loans to financial corporations at the end of the third quarter of 2023 increasing by 1.9% on an annual basis. Their amount was BGN 7.372 billion, which was a 25.2% annual rise. Compared to the end of the previous quarter the number of loans to the financial corporations sector decreased by 2.7% while their amount rose by 7.8%. The loans over BGN 1 million had a 99% share in the total amount of loans to the sector.

The number of loans to households and NPISHs increased annually by 0.9% reaching 2.853 million. Their amount rose by 14% on an annual basis reaching BGN 36.921 billion. Compared to June 2023 the number of these loans increased by 0.3% and their amount – by 4.1%. The loans between BGN 100,000 and BGN 250,000 had the largest share (26.4%) in the total amount of loans to the sector.

Deposits

At the end of the third quarter of 2023 the number of deposits to non-financial corporations, financial corporations, households and NPISHs increased by 0.1% on an annual basis and their amount – by 9.4%.

There were 619,000 deposits of the non-financial corporations sector, which was a 0.3% increase, compared to the the end of September 2022. These deposits amounted to BGN 42.327 billion marking a 8.8% annual increase. Compared to June 2023 their number rose by 0.3% and their amount – by 4.4%.

The three economic activities with the largest shares in the total amount of deposits of the sector were repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (25.5%), manufacturing (15.5%) and professional, scientific and technical activities (9%). The deposits over BGN 1 million have the largest share (58.4%) in the total amount of deposits.

At the end of September 2023 there were 7,399 deposits of the financial corporations sector which was an increase of 4.1% in comparison with the same month of 2022. At the end of the third quarter of 2023 they amounted to BGN 3.383 billion decreasing by 5.6% on an annual basis. Compared to June 2023 their number rose by 0.7%, while their amount decreased by 12.4%. The deposits over BGN 1 million held the biggest share (86.1%) in the total amount of deposits.

There were 8.860 million deposits of the households and NPISHs sector, which was an annual increase of 0.1%. The amount of these deposits increased by 10.5% on an annual basis reaching BGN 76.460 billion. Compared to the previous quarter the number of deposits increased by 0.6% and their amount – by by 2.4%. The deposits between BGN 50 thousand and BGN 100 thousand formed the largest share (18.3%) of the total amount of deposits.
