In September 2023, the unemployment rate in Bulgaria was 4.5%, stable compared to August 2023 and up from 4% in September 2022, according to Eurostat data released on Friday. The number of unemployed people in Bulgaria in September 2023 was 139,000 compared to 138,000 in August 2023.

The EU unemployment rate was 6% in September 2023, stable compared with August 2023 and down from 6.1% in September 2022. 

Eurostat estimates that 13 million persons in the EU, of whom 11 million in the euro area, were unemployed in September 2023. Compared with August 2023, unemployment increased by 95,000 in the EU and by 69,000 in the euro area. Compared with September 2022, unemployment decreased by 126,000 in the EU and by 212,000 in the euro area.

In September 2023, youth unemployment in Bulgaria was 11.4%, down form 11.8% in August 2023 and up from 9.8% in September 2022. 

The EU youth unemployment rate was 14.2% in September 2023, up from 14.1% in August 2023. In the euro area it was 14% in September, up from 13.9% in the previous month. Youth unemployment increased by 38,000 in the EU and by 21,000 in the euro area month on month. Year-on-year youth unemployment decreased by 133,000 in the EU and by 119,000 in the euro area. 

In Bulgaria, the unemployment rate in September 2023 was 4.6% for women and 4.4% for men. 

In the EU, the unemployment rate for women was 6.3%, up from 6.2% in August 2023. The unemployment rate for men was 5.7% in September 2023, stable compared with the previous month. In the euro area, the unemployment rate for women was 6.8% and the unemployment rate for men was 6.2%, both stable compared with the previous month.
