Over half of audited national road infrastructure in warranty period is was found to be deviating from the quality standards, Regional Development and Public Works Minister Andrey Tsekov said here Monday. He was speaking at a news conference where his Ministry announced the results of tests done on warrantied roads.

The tests aimed to find out whether there are any problems with the quality of the materials used and the thickness of the road structure.

The checks started in September 2023 and will be done on the regular basis, said the Minister.

Tests of the longitudinal evenness found problems in four of 13 tested roads. Test of the road thickness found non-compliance in seven roads.

The findings have been communicated with the contractors and the supervising companies and action has already been taken to address the issues.

No supervising company has expressed any objections to the findings, the Minister said.

"Clearly, there are deviations from the standards and regular control is lacking: both by the supervising companies and the State," said Tsekov.

On Struma Motorway, which connects the capital Sofia with the Greek border at Kulata, the tests found deviations on 12 road sections. On the Aheloi ringroad, on the Black Sea coast, the experts found 22 deviant samples out of 32 taken on the 5-km road. The situation was similar with the Dobrich ring road, as the deviations concern the thickness of the upper road layer.

The roads that were tested were picked based on the date of expiration of the warranty, said the Minister.

The tests were done on 165 km of roads and looked at the longitudinal evenness of 13 road sections, the expansion joints on five bridges and the thickness of 10 road sections.
