Economy and Industry Minister Bogdan Bogdanov Sunday told the Bulgarian National Radio that his Ministry has proposed to the business industry to sell 15 basic food products from the small consumer basket at the best possible prices before the start of the winter season to protect the most vulnerable consumers.

Some of the measures provide for as much of the products to be locally produced in order to reduce the risk of transport price increases, inflation or recession in the import country. A dialogue with the major food chains is also underway, the minister said.

If necessary, price caps can be imposed for a certain period of time, but according to the Minister, optimal basics’ prices can be achieved through dialogue with major food chains.

It is important for consumers to be informed where and when they can find a certain product, Bogdanov noted.

The ministry is also urging food chains to start publishing information to the National Statistical Institute on these 15 products to ensure adequate retail price information.

These are part of the measures that the Economy Ministry envisages and they will be implemented before the winter period starts, Minister Bogdanov stressed.
