There should be an expert discussion of strategy, positions and options, Energy Minister Rumen Radev said on Friday during the national energy conference on the pros and cons of RES and energy security. In his words, discussions cannot be limited due to the development of technologies.

Regarding energy strategy, Minister Radev said that the goal is to achieve low-emission energy. According to him, there is no such concept as emission-free energy, so Bulgaria should concentrate on achieving low-emission energy.

Radev pointed out that low-emission energy includes nuclear energy, solar energy systems, wind power, geothermal energy, hydropower, and biomass.

The Energy Minister added that the aim of the energy strategy, for which working groups are being formed, is to develop a concept. Its philosophy is to develop serious basic capacities, but they should be meaningful in scale, Minister Radev clarified. That is why the decision has been taken to build Unit 7 and eventually Unit 8 on the Kozloduy NPP site. At the same time, opportunities will be sought to build large energy storage systems. Projects have already been developed so that a preliminary study can be started for two new pumped storage hydroelectric power plants without compromising already built hydro projects, the Energy Minister informed.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov announced that work was being prepared on a new pumped storage plant with a capacity many times that of the Chaira pumped storage plant, while work was underway to refurbish the Chaira pumped storage plant. Energy Minister Radev explained in the National Assembly during the debate on the motion of no confidence in the government that two new pumped storage plants with an installed capacity of 1,600 megawatts are part of the government's plans. They will be located at the Dospat and Batak dams and should go into operation in 2032.
