American companies are the fourth largest foreign investor in Bulgaria, American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria President Olivier Marquette said at Tuesday's Business Breakfast with the Government. Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov, ministers and AmCham Bulgaria members took part in the event organized by the Chamber to mark the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the US and Bulgaria.

American investments total BGN 5.5 billion, including Canadian investments of BGN 1.3 billion, Marquette said. American companies have created 40,000 jobs and Canadian investors account for about 5,000 jobs. This is a good achievement but there is still room for improvement, provided there is a favourable business environment, eased requirements and broader digitalization.

Marquette noted that several strategic initiatives could help improve conditions in Bulgaria as an investment destination. Health care comes first and foremost. Investors need a trained workforce, for which the education system is responsible, but it is also very important to look after the health of all these people, the AmCham President said.

The energy transition is another major topic - every company is making sure it can achieve a successful transition to decarbonization, Marquette said. Furthermore, he believes that AmCham members will be able to participate actively in Ukraine's reconstruction by setting an example with technology and resources, adding that this will be a key priority for AmCham Bulgaria.
