site.btaExpert Warns against Human Intervention in Kremikovtzi Ecosystem

A remarkable ecosystem has developed in Kremikovtzi thanks to that that there are no longer people to exploit the mine. What can be done and what always should be done in such instances is to leave it untouched. In fact this will be the most sensible thing at this stage, architect Slava Savova told BTA. She is the author of a project, Ruda, dedicated to the mining industries and the ecosystem in the region of Kremikovtzi.

Rida presents a series of micro stories and focuses on the invisible process of unplanned recultivation, on naturally rising underground waters and plant and animal species which find shelter on the terraced walls of the mines.

„It seems that we are a bit late in studying these processes related to Bulgaria’s industrialization, which took place at a very fast pace in the post-war years. Now is the time to look back, assess what happened and set it within a political context and from now on begin to map out more sensible strategies for the protection of the environment,” said Savova.

In 2021, Slava Savova began a survey of the development of the mining industries in Bulgaria and in February 2023 she published the first article of this study, focused on the environmental history of the Devnenska plain.
