The participation of renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network increased by 49.03% for the period January 1, 2023 - August 20, 2023 compared to January 1, 2022 - August 20, 2022, shows data from the last operational report on the energy balance in the country of the Electricity System Operator (ESO), published on the operator's page on Tuesday. 

From the beginning of the year to August 20, the share of RES in the transmission network was reported in the amount of 1,537,624 megawatt hours, while in 2022 this share was 1,031,778 megawatt hours. The participation of RES in the distribution network also increased - by 7.23% in the compared period.

Electricity production in Bulgaria decreased by 22.24% for the period January 1, 2023 - August 20, 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. From the beginning of the year to August 20, 26,002,045 megawatt hours were produced, while for the same period period of the past year, the electricity produced was 33,437,086 megawatt hours.

From January 1 to August 20, 2023, electricity consumption in the country decreased by 5.42%. For this period of the year, 23,408,022 megawatt hours were consumed, while in the same period last year, consumption was 24,750,725 megawatt hours.

The balance (export-import) of electricity has decreased by 70.14%, the ESO report also shows.

The participation of base plants in the country's energy balance from the beginning of the year to August 20 compared to this period in 2022 also decreased (by 27.02%). Between January 1 to August 20, 2023, 20,528,606 megawatt-hours of electricity were produced from base plants, while for the same period in 2022, electricity from them was 28,128,323 megawatt-hours.

A decrease in electricity produced by hydroelectric power plants by minus 16.15% was reported for the period January 1, 2023 - August 20, 2023 compared to January 1, 2022 - August 20, 2022, the ESO report also indicated.
