Men held 63.5% of the leadership positions at senior and middle management level in Bulgaria in 2021. In state-owned enterprises and companies with majority state participation, 72.5% of the leaders were men, the National Statistical Institute said on Monday. The data are from the Institute's electronic publication on equality between women and men in governance in 2021, which covers 22,163 leadership positions on senior and middle management level in legislative, executive, and judicial institutions and other independent structures.

At the senior level, 68.8% of leadership positions were held by men in 2021. Women were best represented at the level of deputy head, 41.1%. The biggest share of leadership positions held by women were observed in judicial institutions, 53%, and the lowest were registered in legislative institutions, 24.2%.

At the end of 2021, 28.3% of municipal counselors and 29.3% of mayors were women.

Women held over 50% of the leadership positions in specialized territorial administrations, scientific organizations, and public media.
