The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency and the National Revenue Agency will complete their checks on lot traceability for milk products by the end of August, the aim being to establish how value added is distributed from field to shelf, Agriculture and Food Minister Kiril Vatev told reporters on Saturday. Vatev opened the fowl hunting season in the Sofia State Forestry Farm.

He added that fruit and vegetable growers also asked for such inspections at Friday's Consultative Council.

A programme for fruit and vegetable collection points is being prepared to encourage farmer cooperatives and ensure equal access to the market. At those points, produce will be graded, calibrated and packaged and will meet the highest standards, the Minister said, adding that this is the only way even the smallest producers can reach the big supermarkets. This will be part of an effort to reverse the tendency of farmers giving up fruit and vegetable growing and animal farming.

Commenting on the just opened fowl hunting season, Vatev said that some 150,000 people in Bulgaria hold hunting permits. Foreign hunters, particularly from Italy, are also showing interest.

Asked if a register of proven poachers can be started, the Minister said they should be in prison, not on the register. Vatev said he had not had reports on poaching in the two months since he headed the Agriculture Ministry.
