Central Bank Reports Y/Y Increase in Loans and Deposits at End-June

The number of loans to non-financial corporations, financial corporations, households and non-profit institutions serving households (NPISHs) was up by 1.7% on an annual basis at the end of the second quarter of 2023 and their amount rose by 11.9%. At the end of June, the number of deposits to non-financial corporations, financial corporations, households and NPISHs decreased by 0.7% on an annual basis while their amount rose by 12.3%, the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) said in its June report on loans and deposits.

Loans

There were 152,000 loans to non-financial corporations at the end of the second quarter of 2023, up by 2.5% on an annual basis. Their total amount was BGN 43.025 billion, up by 8.5% on an annual basis. Compared to the end of the previous quarter, the number of loans to non-financial corporations decreased by 0.3% while their amount rose by 2.3%.

There were 1,016 loans issued to financial corporations as at the end of the second quarter of 2023, up by 5.9% on an annual basis. They totalled BGN 6.839 billion, up by 24.8% year on year. Compared to the end of the previous quarter, the number of loans to the financial corporations sector increased by 4.5% and their amount rose by 6.3%.

As at the end of June 2023, the number of loans to households and NPISHs increased by 1.6% on an annual basis, reaching 2,845,000. Their amount rose by 14% on an annual basis, reaching BGN 35.481 billion. Compared to end-March 2023, the number of these loans increased by 0.4% and their amount rose by 4.1%. At the end of June 2023, the loans between BGN 100,000 and BGN 250,000 accounted for the largest share (26.2%) of all loans to the sector.

Deposits

There were 618,000 deposits of non-financial corporations at the end of June 2023, up by 0.5% year on year. At the end of the second quarter of 2023, these deposits amounted to BGN 40.550 billion, up by 16.5% on an annual basis. Compared to end-March 2023, their number rose by 0.8%, while their amount decreased by 1.8%.

At the end of June 2023, there were 7,343,000 deposits of financial corporations, up by 5.3% year on year. At the end of the second quarter of 2023, they amounted to BGN 3.862 billion, increasing by 7.1% on an annual basis. Compared to end-March 2023, their number rose by 1.6%, while their amount decreased by 12.4%.

At the end of the second quarter of 2023, there were 8,805,000 deposits of households and NPISHs, down by 0.8% on an annual basis. At the end of June 2023, the amount of these deposits was up by 10.4% on an annual basis, reaching BGN 74.675 billion. Compared to the previous quarter, the number of deposits increased insignificantly and their amount grew by 2%. At the end of June 2023, the deposits ranging between BGN 50,000 and BGN 100,000 accounted for the largest share (18.2%) of the total amount of deposits, the BNB said.
