4% of Bulgarians Feel Uninformed about Cyber Security Issues - Trend Poll

Some 64% of Bulgarians feel uninformed about cyber security issues, Trend Research Centre’s first nationally representative survey on cyber security in the country shows. The results were presented by Trend Co-founder Evelina Slavkova at the BTA National Press Club in Sofia on Tuesday.

Around 42% rated themselves as somewhat uninformed and 22% completely uninformed. Some 30% consider themselves to be knowledgeable and 3% did not rate their knowledge on the issue.

The study was commissioned by the Union for Private Economic Enterprise.

About 21% said they use the internet almost all day, 40% several times a day, 14% once a day, and 14% said they never use the internet. Just over 50% stated that they feel safe when using the internet and around 38% were unsure.

A total of 5% said they have been a victim of cybercrime, while 88% respond negatively. Around 41% have shared personal information on the internet and 54% have not. 53% would spend time and effort to improve their awareness of the issue. 48% of the respondents expressed belief that parents are most responsible for the safety of children in cyberspace.

According to 25% of the respondents, better education and awareness of citizens will improve the prevention of cybercrime in Bulgaria. 39% expressed belief that the solution is strict laws and effective enforcement of sanctions, 12% indicated that there is a need for increased investment in cybersecurity at the national level, and 13% argued that there is a need for improved cooperation between institutions, business and society.

“We are living in a very strange time where insecurity is everywhere and we are forced to talk about energy and food security, but also currently very seriously about cyber security, pointed out Union for Private Economic Enterprise Chair Kuzman Iliev. He added that most Bulgarians are not aware of the institutions that fight cybercrime.

A huge number of citizens become victims of cybercrime in one way or another, noted Commissioner Vladimir Dimitrov, head of the Cybercrime Department at the General Directorate Combating Organised Crime. According to him, a large part of citizens become victims of this type of crime due to lack of information or ignorance. About 30 cybercrime alerts are received per day, he added.
