Over 1,000 authors from 63 countries are applying to participate in the 23rd edition of the International Print Biennial in Varna, which will take place in mid-August, said Varna Municipality.
At the initiative of Svetoslava Georgieva, head of the Culture and Spiritual Development Directorate, authors have the possibility for the first time to apply on an online platform that provides information about the competition programme, the composition of the jury and the history of the event.
Among the countries that have applied to participate in this year's event are countries with centuries-old traditions in this art, such as China, Japan, Thailand, Poland, India, Turkiye and Italy. There are also applications from Peru, Iran, Nepal, Paraguay and many more countries. All previous editions of the forum are collected and documented on the online platform through a bilingual color catalog, which is sent to all participants, as well as to cultural institutions abroad.
The jury will be chaired by its honorary member Prof Stoimen Stoilov, with members including Richard Noyce from Great Britain, Elspeth Lamb from Scotland, Francesco Parisi from Italy and Zang Liang from China. The Bulgarian jury will consist of Peter Lazarov, Emanuela Kovach, Dimo Kolibarov and Dimo Milanov.
The International Print Biennial is held at the City Art Gallery in Varna, which houses a permanent exhibition of graphic works and drawings, as well as a separate space for the Graphic Art Gallery. It is among the ten oldest gatherings for graphic art in Europe and the oldest biennial in Bulgaria, established in 1981. The forum is organized by Varna Municipality, together with the Culture Ministry and the Union of Bulgarian Artists.
