The south-central city of Plovdiv will host the 9th Global Wine Tourism Conference. The initiative, organized by the Tourism Ministry in partnership with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), will popularize Bulgaria's rich history, culture, and tourism opportunities as well as present the country as a top destination for culinary and wine tourism, the Tourism Ministry said in a press release Thursday. On this occasion, Tourism Minister Miroslav Borshosh and UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili visited Plovdiv, where they held a working meeting with Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov to outline the first steps in the event's preparation.
"We have chosen Plovdiv to host the 9th Global Conference of the World Tourism Organization. Bulgaria won the recognition of the UN specialized agency in competition with many countries, and I am proud of this success. This is an exceptional opportunity to present our country as an attractive destination for wine tourism to the world's biggest media and authorities in this sector," said Minister Borshosh.
Dimitrov recalled that Plovdiv hosts two wine festivals, Young Wine Festival and Wine and Gourmet, which attract hundreds of wine lovers every year. "Our city has proven its commitment to the development of wine tourism, and we look forward to showcasing its charm on the global stage," Dimitrov underscored.
Pololikashvili personally toured some of the city's most iconic cultural and historical sites and expressed his admiration for its rich heritage and tourism potential.
On February 25, Borshosh and Pololikashvili signed a letter of intent officially approving Bulgaria to host the 9th Global Wine Tourism Conference.
