Sofia is hosting its first Venetian Carnival, say the organizers of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria. The event will take place on March 8 at Sofia’s Central Military Club

 with the support of the Italian Embassy, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Veneto Region.

"All participants will receive a free artisanal Venetian mask, hand-painted by craftsmen from the region of Venice, will attend live performances by Venetian artists and masks from the commedia dell'arte. Music, theatre, dancing and the typical Carnival pranks, performed by masked jugglers and stilt performers will accompany the evening with the active participation of the cultural association La Maison du theatre (Theatre House) from the town of San Michele al Tagliamento. The event will be accompanied by an exquisite buffet accompanied by fine Italian wines," say the organizers.

In their words, the event will also offer cultural and business opportunities, with the participation of representatives of Italian institutions, entrepreneurs, artists and diplomats, who will mark the lasting link between Italy and Bulgaria.

The Venice Carnival is one of the most famous in the world and its tradition dates back to the 11th century, but it only officially became a universal celebration two centuries later. During its 10-day duration, Venice's residents and thousands of visitors put on disguise and parade through the narrow streets and small squares in organized or impromptu processions. They dress in clothes inspired by the typical dress of 18th century Venice, a time of cultural and artistic flourish. Masked balls are held and famous Venetian palaces host private events. Today, the Carnival of Venice is one of the most attractive international events.
