Bulgarian author Daniel Metodiev received the Bridging Cultures Award from the Association of Spanish-speaking Journalists in Bulgaria, Metodiev told BTA on Monday. The award was received on behalf of Nara Vasconcelos, International Chair of the Zenon Cultural Institute, as Metodiev, the author of Bulgarian Footsteps in Distant Brazil: Names, Dates, Stories and Destinies, lives in Brazil.
During the ceremony, which was part of the 12th edition of the Worlds and Colours journalism contest, Metodiev expressed hope that his book would serve as a bridge between the cultures of Bulgaria and Brazil. He proceeded to thank Lina Gergova of the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, who edited the book and helped with the writing and publication processes.
In his speech, Metodiev said: "This award is a huge recognition of my work in the completion of this book, as well as a recognition and a kind of remembrance of the Bulgarian emigrants who have lived in Brazil over the years and their incredibly colourful and romantic lives and stories."
Metodiev is a geologist. He has lived in Mozambique and Portugal before finally settling in Brazil more than a decade ago. His book features stories of more than 30 Bulgarians, who also chose Brazil as their new home.
