More than 40 portraits on canvas and paper by Samuil Velev will be displayed in the exhibition Stranger at the Bobbina Cultural Space in Sofia between December 3 and 12, the organizers reported on Tuesday.
Stranger explores the connection between the outer and the inner world of the subjects. Velev tries to capture and to show a person’s character as it transpires through their appearance, coloured by the artist’s own perception and modified many times over through the eyes of the viewers. This multiplicity of interpretation is at the heart of the series, the Bobbina staff said.
Samuil Velev graduated in painting from the National School of Fine Arts in Sofia. In 2024, he earned a bachelor’s degree in painting from the National Academy of Art in the Bulgarian capital. As an undergraduate, he went to the Brera Academy in Milan under a student exchange programme. There, he developed his style, experimenting with colours and techniques. He has contributed to many group exhibitions. Works by Velev have been displayed in Berlin and Vienna.
