The exhibition Ludwig Wittgenstein: A Home for Gretl has opened at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute (BCI) in Haus Wittgenstein in Vienna. The news was reported by the BCI and the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture on Monday. It is a project of Austria’s Wittgenstein Initiative supported by the Austrian and Bulgarian culture ministries.

In an opening address, Bulgarian Culture Minister Nayden Todorov stressed the importance of cultural relations with Austria and the role of culture in getting across borders, which was understood back in the Cold War. For almost a century now, the BCI, which has its offices in Haus Wittgenstein, has mediated a meeting of cultures in unison with the messages of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Todorov recalled an old saying that architecture is, essentially, frozen music. “In this sense, looking at this building, which was ultra-modern in its time, its furnishings as shown in the photos, we see a connection between the classic and the modern,” the Culture Minister said, adding that Haus Wittgenstein serves as a link between Bulgaria and Austria. The exhibition attests to the two nations’ shared horizons, Todorov said, as quoted by his ministry.

Bulgarian Ambassador to Austria Desislava Naidenova, BCI Director Rumyana Koneva and Vienna Diplomatic Academy Director Emil Brix were special guests at the opening event.
