The Crisis Preparedness in Food, Animals and Plants (SANTE.G) of the European Commission's Directorate General for Health and Food Safety has sent an opinion to the Executive Director of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA), calling on Bulgaria to immediately implement measures to eradicate the identified outbreak of ovine rinderpest (aka peste des petits ruminants or PPR), in accordance with Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/687, as further delays threaten the health of sheep and goats, not only on the territory of Bulgaria, but throughout the European Union. This was announced by BFSA on its website. The opinion was sent on December 3.
The Directorate specifies that PPR is a highly contagious viral disease affecting sheep and goats, categorised as a Category A disease under Article 9(1)(a) of Regulation (EU) 2016/429, which requires immediate eradication upon detection.
