Vidin citizens living in the capital initiated the restoration of the George Byron memorial in Vidin. The chairman of the Sofia Chamber of Stonemasons has refused to be paid for his work. He presented the plaque to Vidin, Prof. Vili Lilkov told BTA.

"I recently found out that the moraine in front of the Synagogue is actually a monument to Byron. I asked where the plaque was and found out that it had been stolen. Then Vergil Marinov, the former director of Lyuben Karavelov School, decided to restore this commemorative plaque," explained Prof. Lilkov. The Municipality of Vidin provided the exact text and original dimensions of the inscription. "This is the only Byron monument in Bulgaria. Until recently, I did not know that our city was described in Don Juan", he added.

The memorial sign was placed in 1988 on the initiative of students from the English high school in Vidin. Then the Danube city hosted the culmination of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the poet's birth in Bulgaria.

The 200th anniversary from the poet's death will take place in 2024.
