Two Polish citizens have been detained following the discovery of a high-tech laboratory for the production of amphetamine and methamphetamine in the village of Emona, Nessebar Municipality (on the Black Sea). Two other Polish nationals, who are abroad but are believed to be involved in the crime, are wanted, District Prosecutor Georgi Chinev told a news conference in Burgas.

He said the laboratory is unparalleled in Bulgaria in terms of capacity and equipment. The entire batch of drugs was intended for the Polish market.

The laboratory was busted on April 16 after it had been operating for two months. Its equipment was imported and is of extremely high quality, capable of churning out a large quantity of pills daily.

According to Senior Commissioner Boyan Raev, Deputy Director of the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, the quality of the end-product was very high, using mephedrone. The lab had a capacity to produce 100 litres, including 30 litres of liquid amphetamine, which was then processed into some 150 kilograms of amphetamine.

The two Poles, aged 61 and 51, have lived in Bulgaria for nearly a year. One of them had a degree in chemical engineering. They were arrested while methamphetamine was being made in the lab. The older of the two is wanted under a European arrest warrant issued by Poland for similar offenses.

The lab was housed in a holiday home rented by the Poles. The Bulgarian landlord was also detained. He told investigators he had no knowledge of his tenants’ activities.

The two arrested Poles have been remanded in custody.
