A total of 261 specialized police operations were carried out by officers of the General Directorate Combating Organized Crime (GDCOC) in 2024, neutralizing 118 organized crime groups, the Interior Ministry said on its website Monday.
In the past year, investigations were carried out for 992 pre-trial proceedings, of which 513 were new ones, and charges were brought against 343 people for crimes committed.
A total of 71 operations were conducted to counter cybercrime. Dozens of DDoS attacks and unauthorized database access to state institutions and commercial companies were prevented. Access was cut to hundreds of thousands of copyrighted items, and tens of thousands of internet links containing child sexual abuse and illegal child sexual exploitation material were taken down.
In terms of prevention among adolescents, nearly 100 lectures were presented to school and university students to introduce new challenges on the internet and ways to protect against cybercrime, along with participation in a number of forums, conferences and events, including international ones.
In 2024, actions were successfully carried out to counter human trafficking, illegal migration, terrorism, smuggling, trafficking in cultural property, money laundering, tax evasion, social security fraud, and misuse of EU funds.
The employees of the GDCOC have proved that they can be responsible, they work effectively and set an example of good cooperation between institutions, said Interior Minister Daniel Mitov at the presentation of the report-analysis.
He outlined several government priorities for the service to continue working on - fighting drug trafficking and distribution in the country, neutralizing hybrid threats and strengthening cyber security, countering corruption, money laundering, smuggling of risky goods and cargo.
The Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Chief Commissioner Miroslav Rashkov, added to the important tasks of the GDCOC increasing the budget revenues by preventing the illegal production and movement of excise goods in the country and the importance of inter-institutional cooperation in this line with the revenue agencies and other law enforcement bodies.
