In 2024, the units of the General Directorate of Fire Safety and Population Protection responded to 48,324 accidents, a decrease of 4.4% compared to 2023. Some 35, 430 fires occurred, which is 73.3% of all accidents. There is a 4.3% increase in the total number of fires compared to 2023, Chief Commissioner Alexander Dzhartov said while reporting on the Directorate’s activities for the past year.
Some 12,894 rescues were carried out, 16, 561 fewer than in 2023. However, in 2024, compared to 2023, an increase in the number of people killed in fires is reported - 126 people compared to 113 in the previous year.
Fires causing direct material losses accounted for 22.1% of all recorded fires, a 4.9% increase on the previous year. Fires with no material loss were 27,598, up 4.1% from 2023. Intentional fires were 261, Chief Commissioner Dzhartov added.
According to him, in the past year, 1,130 inspections were carried out to ensure compliance with fire safety rules and regulations and 110 inspections to control the implementation of prescribed measures in homes for the elderly and disabled, medical and social care homes and hospices. In 86 establishments, non-compliances were found and 80 written orders were served to remedy them and 11 administrative acts were of violations issued.
The difficulties we face now and last year are that there are not enough funds. Nevertheless, we are very active on projects to make up for this shortfall, Dzhartov said. He added that there is a need for a modern logistics and human resources management system. There are also problems with maintaining out of warranty equipment.
Every unit has invested money to improve working conditions. A large part of the budget, 96%, is spent on personnel, which hampers the development of the directorate. It is extremely insufficient and the main part of our income comes from the projects we participate in, Dzhartov explained.
