"In 2025, priority will be set on recruiting service members for the Land Forces," Bulgaria's Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov, told journalists here on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, he presented an Analysis of the Condition and Preparation of the Armed Forces in 2024 on the first day of the two-day Annual Conference of the Chief of Defence (February 25-26).
The Chief of Defence said that 2024 was a difficult but successful year for the Bulgarian Armed Forces. "Bulgaria does not consume security but generates security on NATO's southeastern flank," he said.
"The action taken by the State for the service persons is producing an effect, and the military profession is attracting heightened interest," the Admiral reported. He said that recruiting personnel for the fast-moving elements of the Land Forces will be prioritized during the current year. "Along with fulfilling assignments under the three missions of the Armed Forces, a lot of work has been done on the certification projects. The Graf Ignatievo airfield has been certified, and we are ready to receive the first F-16 aircraft," Eftimov said. The first [multi-role modular patrol] vessel is expected to go through underway tests this summer, and ammunition and other supplies are being procured on an accelerated basis, so as to acquire initial military capabilities, the Chief of Defence reported.
He argued that the defence policy is on the right course. "With the present financial framework we can keep up the modernization pace," the Admiral said.
