Addressing a discussion on geothermal energy as part of Tuesday's Energy Summit at the Sofia Event Center, Netherlands Ambassador Simon van der Burg said that in a world of tariffs, trade wars and geopolitical tension, it is more important than ever to seek opportunities within the EU as partners.
The diplomat took the opportunity to highlight the strengthening of relations between the Netherlands and Bulgaria in agriculture and geothermal energy - two sectors with untapped potential for synergy.
He said Bulgaria sits on top of a treasure - geothermal energy, which can play a significant role in various aspects as a local and reliable source of energy for a secure, competitive and sustainable production of fresh produce.
The Ambassador addressed some challenges in harnessing geothermal resources, including access to capital, suitable funding tools and predictable regulations and procedures.
He welcomed the Bulgarian government's support for geothermal energy development, emphasizing that the whole country and its citizens stand to benefit from it.
Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov spoke before the Ambassador, saying that Bulgaria would draw on the experience of the Netherlands and Hungary, with technical assistance from the World Bank to help develop the country’s geothermal potential.
