Sending Bulgarian troops to Ukraine has never been discussed in any form, Nikolay Denkov, Co-Floor Leader of Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria and former prime minister, told journalists on Tuesday. Denkov made the comment on his way to a meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security, which would discuss the national security risks stemming from the spread of narcotics and intoxicants among the younger generation.

He noted that under a parliamentary resolution, Bulgaria provides only military-technical assistance to Ukraine. "We should reassure the people that nothing has changed in this respect, and our position will remain unchanged for as long as combat action continues. If things come to a peace treaty, if there is no more combat action, it will make sense to discuss what will happen, and it will be discussed in the National Assembly. The National Assembly alone is entitled to discuss and make decisions on the matter," Denkov said.

He believes that Europe's role is indispensable for achieving lasting peace. "It is sheer illusion to think that someone will seal a pace deal without Europe's participation," Denkov said.

The matter of Bulgaria's engagement in Ukraine resurfaced after the US asked its European allies to fill out a questionnaire detailing how many troops and capabilities they could deploy in Ukraine as security guarantees to end the war.

Earlier on Tuesday, President Rumen Radev said he firmly opposes Bulgaria sending troops to Ukraine.
