Monday, April 7, is World Health Day. This date has been marked since 1949 as a professional holiday of health workers.
The World Health Organization has 194 member countries, including Bulgaria.
Each year the theme of the holiday is different. In 2024 the motto was "My health, my right", and in 2025 it is “Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures”.
On April 3, Minister of Health Silvi Kirilov discussed with acting WHO Representative for Bulgaria Guillaume Simonian the cooperation between this country and the organization so far, as well as the future opportunities for cooperation in 2025, such as the sustainable development of human resources in health care and the establishment of a system for the prevention of violence against medical and health care workers.
"On World Health Day, I address you with deep gratitude and respect. You are the people who every day, with professionalism and heart, take care of the life and health of every Bulgarian citizen. Your dedication, your strength and your humanity are invaluable," Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov was quoted as saying in a post on the Council of Ministers' Facebook page. He also said that among the priorities of his cabinet are the construction of a national multidisciplinary hospital for active treatment of children, and the establishment of a national centre for proton radiation therapy.
