Over 18,000 teachers will be trained to work in a STEM environment, said Education Minister Galin Tsokov, who participated in the opening of a new STEM space at the innovative Dimcho Debelyanov School in Sofia, the Ministry said. The training is to be implemented under a new project for improving the quality of general education through the effective implementation of a competency-based model, which is expected to be launched in 2025.

Official guests of the event were Tourism Minister Evtim Miloshev,  Israeli Ambassador Yosi Levi-Sfari, Deputy Education Minister Emilia Lazarova and the Head of Sofia’s regional department of education Vanya Kastreva.

The newly opened space in the school symbolically joins the rest of the STEM environment in the educational institution, thus creating a kind of street for students to study chemistry and robotics. The space resembles an antique urban environment, suitable for diverse activities. Children and young people will have the opportunity to build personal skills and learn key competences in science.

Some BGN 78,000 under the Recovery and Resilience Plan have been invested. Bulgaria is the only country that has negotiated funds for the creation of a STEM learning environment in all educational institutions. With funding from the Plan, over 2,200 STEM centres are being built in schools and personal development support centres. A National STEM Center will also be built at Sofia Tech Park, as well as three regional units across the country, the release said.
