President Rumen Radev awarded the President's Badge of Honour to Air Force officers, recognizing General Miho Mihov (ret.) for his contribution to the development of Bulgarian military aviation and on the occasion of his 75th birthday, the President’s press secretariat said here on Tuesday. Colonel Vladimir Pamporov (ret.) also received the Badge of Honour.

The award ceremony took place on the eve of Aviation and Air Force Day, observed on October 16. Cadets from the Georgi Benkovski Higher Air Force School also attended the ceremony.

"With the upcoming holiday, I am pleased to present the President's Badge of Honour to our pilots, commanders and public figures. This award recognizes their outstanding professional and personal achievements and their significant contributions to advancing the Air Force and improving our country's defence capabilities," President Radev said.

Radev addressed General Mihov, saying, "Your extensive career as a pilot and military leader remains an example of dedication and commitment to the cause of defending the homeland."

Radev praised Mihov’s leadership and impact on Bulgarian military aviation, noting his role in opening it up to society and enhancing its prestige. The President spoke of Mihov’s decisive actions during challenging times, such as the transformation under Plan 2004 and the country’s preparation for NATO membership.

Radev quoted Mihov, stating, "Without aviation, there is no nation," and said that these words will go on to inspire future generations in the pursuit of a secure and prosperous Bulgaria.

Radev praised Pamporov for his dedication to Bulgarian military aviation, highlighting his ability to inspire young people through poetry and prose.

Addressing the cadets, Radev stated, "Aviation cannot exist without continuity; the bonds between generations are crucial."

Mihov thanked everyone on behalf of himself and Pamporov, reflecting on the challenges during the political transition and the efforts to maintain aviation while preparing for NATO membership. He acknowledged the difficulties, saying, "We founded today's air force school with great effort," because there were people who wanted to close down military schools.

Aviation and Air Force Day has been observed since 1963 to mark the anniversary of the first reconnaissance flight in Bulgarian and European history, conducted on October 16, 1912 during the First Balkan War (1912-1913). In addition to reconnaissance, the first aviation bombing in Europe also took place in a real frontline situation. The pilots, Lt. Radul Milkov and Lt. Prodan Tarakchiev, flew their Albatros F-2 over the Edirne fortress, reconnoitred the location of the reserves, and managed to drop two hand grenades over Karaagac station.
