Justice Minister Atanas Slavov said Saturday that the adopted constitutional amendment which allows people with dual citizenship to be elected as MPs, should be refined. In an interview with Nova News, he pointed out that the text would be clearer if it explicitly regulated if the person should have Bulgarian citizenship by birth or it can be his/her second citizenship.

Slavov argued that MPs should be able to have second citizenships from allied countries and international partners and not from such that declare Bulgaria as a hostile country.

He pointed out the issue of dual citizenship is important because a quarter of Bulgarian citizens are living abroad.

“We need to find a way to include them in political life. Maybe this is an attempt for that,” Slavov said. He added that he was not involved in the drafting of these texts and revisions.

The process related to dual citizenship was fully developed in the parliament, Slavov recalled.

The Justice Minister said he is not worried that texts of the Constitution will be challenged before the Constitutional Court.

“I am confident that the key amendments will stand. As Justice Minister it is important for me that the right things are done regarding the judiciary and I am convinced that this is the case," Slavov said.
