Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said his attitude to the Interior Minister will be determined by the way he assesses and responds to the reports of police violence at Thursday’s protest.

It is unacceptable for police officers in the centre of Sofia to act in this way with the protesters, the Prime Minister said, adding that the overwhelming majority of the police acted as they should without using violence, but those who used violence should be investigated and punished.

On Friday, Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria demanded the resignation of Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov over the escalation of tensions during the protest against the leadership of the Bulgarian Football Union. In a statement at the Council of Ministers, Denkov said he saw "a certain inadequate assessment of the situation by the Interior Minister". However, he said he would discuss demands for Stoyanov's resignation with Deputy Prime Minister Mariya Gabriel when she returns from abroad on Monday or Tuesday.
