A wildfire that affected over 1,500 ha of dry grass, shrubs and a pine forest near the Izvorishte village, Burgas Region (Southeastern Bulgaria) was contained around 1:10 a.m. on Tuesday, BTA learnt from the Burgas Regional Directorate of the Interior.

The fire started from Izvorishte on Monday afternoon, and a strong wind spread it to the neighbouring villages Mirolyubovo and Bryastovets and to the Suhoto Dere Weekend-House Area.

The Burgas, Sliven and Yambol fire services rushed 14 fire engines to the site. Dozens of volunteers from nearby villages joined the fire-fighting effort. Five houses in Izvorishte were destroyed by the blaze.

Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov, who visited the scene on Monday evening, wrote on Facebook that several persons had to be evacuated from Izvorishte and Suhoto Dere.

In his words, this is the eighth fire in the area and, in his opinion, it was caused by human negligence.
