The Prosecutors Chamber of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) Wednesday approved the reports from the Committee on Appraisals and Competitions (CAC) and the Committee on Professional Ethics (CPE) regarding acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, who has been nominated for Prosecutor General. As a result, Sarafov has been granted a hearing that will take place on January 16.
The decision was carried unanimously with eight votes and no debate.
Sarafov has been serving as acting Prosecutor General since June 2023, when the SJC voted his predecessor, Ivan Geshev, out of office.
CAC Chair Ognian Damyanov praised Sarafov for his “proven administrative skills and high professional qualities”, adding that he meets all the necessary requirements.
CPE Chair Georgi Kuzmanov said that Sarafov “adheres to a high ethical standard, has extensive experience, and is firmly committed to the rule of law”. Kuzmanov added that Sarafov serves as an example for “affirming a state governed by the rule of law”.
On Tuesday, both CAC and CPE of the Prosecutors Chamber confirmed that Borislav Sarafov meets all requirements and possesses the qualities necessary to hold the Prosecutor General’s office.
