Students from several Belgrade faculties blocked the tram and bus depot of the City Transport Company in the New Belgrade quarter in the Serbian capital on Friday at around 3 am on Friday, local media reported.

Students blocking the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Belgrade announced the action on their social media accounts and added that the blockade will continue "until further notice".

Ten tram lines in Belgrade are not running, 16 bus lines are also not serving passengers, the City Transport Company confirmed.

"150 buses and 130 trams are not running their regular routes. This prevents passenger transport on 16 bus and 10 tram lines," the transport company said in a statement on Instagram.

The students, who have been blocking over 60 faculties in Serbia since last November, support the demands of transport workers for better working conditions and higher salaries.

The student blockades in higher education institutions across the country were prompted by the tragedy in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad, where on November 1 last year, after a recent renovation of the railway station, its concrete canopy collapsed, killing 15 people.
