The Serbian government, which was elected on May 2, 2024, officially resigned before Parliament on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Milos Vucevic stepped down from his post back on January 28 over a baseball bat attack on a group of protesting students in Novi Sad outside the office of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party.
National Assembly Chair Ana Brnabic thanked Vucevic for the ‘honest and fair performance of his work’ as well as for his ‘responsible and courageous behaviour’, Serbian media reported.
According to the Serbian constitution, once the resignation of the prime minister is established, a 30-day period for the election of a new government begins.
If a new cabinet is not elected within that period, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is obliged to call a snap parliamentary election, the texts of Serbia's basic law say.
"If a government is not formed, there will be new elections, which will most likely be held on June 8," Vucic said, stressing that he would negotiate with all political parties, but the most important would be with the ruling Serbian Progressive Party.
Milos Vucevic is Chair of the Serbian Progressive Party, and Vucic is its founder.
